Apple TV 4K 2026 vs 2022: Is A$449 Worth the Upgrade?

Apple TV 4K 2026 vs 2022 comes down to new hardware, not a higher video resolution. Apple’s fourth-generation box adds A19, Wi-Fi 7, built-in microphones and a more findable remote. In Australia it costs A$449 including GST, with pre-orders open from 14 October and availability from 13 November 2026. If your 2022 model already streams reliably, there is no automatic reason to replace it: both support up to 4K at 60fps, and Siri AI is also coming to eligible older 4K models.

This guide separates the confirmed Apple TV 4K specs from shared software features, then explains who should consider the upgrade. Prices, availability and specifications were checked against Apple Australia on 14 October 2026. This is a research-based buying guide, not a hands-on review.

New Apple TV 4K Australia: price and release date

Apple lists one new configuration: 128GB for A$449. The package includes the Apple TV 4K, fourth-generation Siri Remote and power cord. Budget separately for an HDMI cable if you do not already have a suitable one; a USB-C charging cable for the remote is also not included.

There is an important naming distinction. Apple TV 4K is the physical streaming box. Buying it does not unlock every programme in the Apple TV streaming service, Netflix or other subscription apps. Check the services you actually watch and their Australian plans before counting the hardware as your whole entertainment budget.

The confirmed retail date is 13 November. Earlier reports about other dates or an A19 Pro chip should not be treated as the final specifications: Apple’s announcement says A19.

Apple TV 4K 2026 vs 2022: the specification table

The 2022 third-generation model came in two versions. That matters when comparing connectivity: Ethernet and Thread were already present on the 128GB version, so they are not entirely new to Apple TV 4K.

Confirmed Apple TV 4K specs: third generation versus fourth generation
Specification 2022 / 3rd generation 2026 / 4th generation
Chip A15 Bionic A19
Storage 64GB Wi-Fi; 128GB Wi-Fi + Ethernet 128GB
Wi-Fi / Bluetooth Wi-Fi 6 / Bluetooth 5.0 Wi-Fi 7 / Bluetooth 6
Gigabit Ethernet / Thread 128GB model only Included
HDMI / maximum video output HDMI 2.1 / up to 4K at 60fps HDMI 2.1 / up to 4K at 60fps
HDR and spatial audio Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HDR10, HLG; Dolby Atmos The same listed formats
AV1 hardware decoding Not listed in the 2022 specifications Dedicated AV1 decoder
Microphones in the box None; Siri microphone is in the remote Three far-field microphones
Included remote Siri Remote (3rd generation), USB-C Siri Remote (4th generation), Precision Finding and sound
Siri AI eligibility Supported as a 2nd-generation-or-later model, subject to requirements Supported, subject to the same software and device requirements

Neither the new chip nor an HDMI 2.1 label should be read as a promise of 4K at 120fps. Apple’s listed video formats top out at 2160p at 60fps. Dolby Vision, HDR10+ and Dolby Atmos were already supported by the third-generation box.

What the A19 and Wi-Fi 7 changes actually mean

Apple claims up to 50% faster CPU performance and up to twice the GPU performance compared with the third-generation model. Those are manufacturer figures, rather than our measurements. They make the new box more interesting for games and demanding applications, but they do not mean an ordinary film becomes twice as sharp.

For everyday viewing, look for a problem the upgrade would solve. Is your current box struggling with the applications you use? Are games important in your living room? Or are you mostly watching the same streaming services comfortably already? The answers matter more than the chip name alone.

Wi-Fi 7 needs a compatible network to deliver its benefits. Buying the box does not upgrade your router, broadband connection or the service’s video quality. If you already use reliable Ethernet on the 2022 128GB model, a new Wi-Fi standard may offer little practical benefit in that setup.

The dedicated AV1 decoder adds another supported video format. Whether you benefit depends on the service, app and stream delivered to your device. It is not a guarantee that every subscription will use less data or produce better pictures.

Apple TV 4K Siri AI: shared software, different microphones

The biggest potential misunderstanding in Apple TV 4K 2026 vs 2022 is treating Siri AI as exclusive to the new box. Apple says the beta will support Apple TV 4K, second generation or later, through tvOS 27.2, with English among the launch languages in Australia.

There are additional requirements. Apple’s setup calls for the owner of the Home app home to have an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone or iPad with current software and Siri AI enabled in a supported language. Personal-context features rely on the paired device. Owning an Apple TV alone does not remove those conditions, and a beta announcement is not a promise that every capability is ready on day one.

The new physical feature is the set of three far-field microphones in the box. These enable hands-free Siri interaction without picking up the remote, subject to supported settings and availability. Older models can receive compatible Siri AI software without acquiring those microphones.

If Siri AI is your only reason to upgrade, check your current generation and eligible devices first. An existing 2022 Apple TV 4K user should assess the software update before spending A$449 just for the assistant.

The remote and HomePod features: check the full setup

The fourth-generation Siri Remote adds Precision Finding and the ability to play a sound when lost. Precision Finding has its own iPhone compatibility rules: Apple lists iPhone Duo, iPhone Air or iPhone 17 and later, excluding iPhone 17e, with current software. Do not assume any iPhone can provide the same finding experience.

Apple also sells the new remote separately and lists compatibility with Apple TV HD and all Apple TV 4K models. If your real problem is losing the remote, a remote-only purchase is worth checking before replacing a working box. Compare its current Australian price and your phone’s eligibility at purchase time.

The new box also supports a four-speaker surround arrangement using HomePod mini 2 or HomePod (2nd generation), with matching front and rear pairs and supported software. It is a specialised reason to upgrade, rather than an included A$449 surround system: you still need the speakers. The fourth-generation Apple TV requirement and matching-pair rules matter if you already own HomePods.

Should you buy the new Apple TV 4K or keep the 2022 model?

Keep a working 2022 model if your priority is reliable 4K streaming and you do not need hands-free microphones or the new speaker setup. The headline output formats remain familiar, and compatible Siri AI software is not reserved for the fourth generation.

Consider the new box if you are replacing an older or unreliable device, want the additional processing headroom, or will actually use its microphones and expanded HomePod arrangement. Before buying, check that your router, iPhone or iPad and speakers support the features you are paying for.

Consider a discounted third-generation model if the budget matters more than the new hardware. Compare live Australian offers, warranty and the exact capacity: the 64GB Wi-Fi version lacks the Ethernet and Thread features of the 128GB version. We have not verified a current discounted price, so a launch-price comparison should not be mistaken for today’s saving.

My recommendation for Apple TV 4K 2026 vs 2022 is to start with one question: what can I do with the new box that I cannot do comfortably with my existing setup? A concrete answer, such as hands-free control or the supported four-speaker arrangement, is a stronger reason to upgrade than a new model number.

Quick answers

Does the new Apple TV 4K support 4K 120fps?

Apple’s published formats specify up to 4K at 60fps. Do not infer 120fps output from the A19 chip or HDMI 2.1 connection.

Do I need the 2026 box for Siri AI?

Not necessarily. Apple TV 4K Siri AI is planned for second-generation and later models, subject to the tvOS update, language availability and eligible Apple Intelligence device requirements.

What is the new Apple TV 4K Australia price?

The 128GB fourth-generation model costs A$449 including GST. Apple Australia lists availability from 13 November 2026. Streaming subscriptions and accessories can cost extra.
